A set of papers related to the funding campaign, construction, and completion of a sidewalk built in 1918 from the Asticou Inn to the entrance to "President Eliot's house." Includes: invoices from E.A. Hodgdon, minutes of a meeting of the Asticou Sidewalk Committee of the Village Improvement Society, a checkbook for the committee, and cancelled checks related to the work that was completed on the sidewalk construction.These papers were removed from a drawer/box kept in the Study, Thuya Lodge and accessioned under this Object ID number. See relations tab. Curtis was the Treasurer of the committee.

These papers are all related to the book published by Curtis in 1911, "Life of Campestris Ulm: The Oldest Inhabitant of Boston Common". The Northeast Harbor branch of the Mount Desert Nurseries was established in 1898. It was first managed by George Miller, brother of William Miller who managed the Bar Harbor business. It was then managed for several years by Richard Rothe prior to 1910 and then was taken over by Philip McLean. Summit Road. Rothe was a specialist on rock gardening and the photographer who took the picture of Mr. Curtis in front of the granite outcropping that is exhibited in the Lodge. Curtis often used the plants and services of Mount Desert Nurseries in his landscape engineering and garden developing work for clients on the island. It has been established that he used their laborers and plant material for the Bowen estate, Baymeath (Hulls Cove). This records also includes the postmarked envelope that the catalog was mailed to Joseph Curtis in Northeast Harbor.

The house is now (2006) called Random Ridge and is owned by the Crofoot family. This is the first house built by Curtis. It was later added to with a second house further up the hill and connected with a passageway. Architect is George Moffette. Copy appears to have been donated by David Crofoot from inscription on the back.

The journals and papers are in poor condition with mildew spots and other imperfections of age and poor storage conditions. A French teacher reviewed these materials in 2009 and made notes with an overview of many of the materials. These notes are included within the box, affixed to each writing she reviewed.
