1213Burkhart Residence
  • Document, Projection, Architectural Drawing
  • Structures, Dwellings, House
library cabinet elevations, elevations, site plan, floor plan Roc's comments: Two delightful older retired people from New York State. Mrs. Burkhardt loved Japanese architecture and brought a number of books to the office. We had a great time working together and they lived their remaining years together in their dream house. I think we did this one in early 2000.

1219Dartmouth College Additions and Renovations to the Thayer School of Engineering
  • Document, Projection, Architectural Drawing
  • Structures, Institutional, School
October 15, 1987 wall sections and details Roc's comments: We did an addition to the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth when I was an associate at the firm of Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown in Philadelphia. It was a pleasure and education working for Bob Venturi and John Rauch as the Project Manager on this project. The stock market took a dive when the bids were due and this project came in one million dollars under budget. The professors were delighted when we used the money to upgrade their laboratory equipment. This was the only class 1000 clean room I was involved with and I enjoyed doing the drawings of the entry structure and overseers room myself. Tom Fisher was the project manager for the very complicated construction phase and the Boston firm Payette Associates expert laboratory designers were our partners on this project. As complicated as anything I have ever done and a great preparation for the two hospital additions we did in later years. I liked this kind of complicated work. After this project the Venturi firm was asked to do two major projects for Dartmouth.

1225Fox Family Residence
  • Document, Projection, Architectural Drawing
  • Structures, Dwellings, House
basement/foundation plan, details and specifications, floor plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules Roc's Comments: Sam and Mary Alice Fox were two retired doctors. They had quite an amazing history and decided to retire to his family's vacation site on the Southern end of Long Pond. Wonderful site and truly inspiring people. We went thru an orderly and thorough design and construction process and I enjoyed every moment of it and was honored to be their friend here on MDI after that. We always had some little project to solve together, but I think it was just an excuse to hang out. Their family were all very tall, thus the lofty feeling inside. Mary Alice had severe arthritis and we installed a good sized hot tub off of their master bathroom. No moisture problems due to serious research on our part. If this house pleases the viewer, they are getting just a small sense of how wonderful these two were.

proposed relocation and addition Roc's Comments: The Fox Family needed more vacation space for their growing families. Mary Alice had died and Sam at 90+ needed a good project to sink his teeth into. This house was really done for the adult children Emily Conant, Sam Fox Jr., Edward?, and their families. Turned out well.

1239Houseboat
  • Document, Projection, Architectural Drawing
  • Structures, Dwellings, House
Elevations, floor plan, sketches Roc's Comments: Geddy Mitchell was a local scalawag. I think he sold drugs in his early years and made enough money to buy a bar named Geddy's Pub on Main Street in Bar Harbor. He had something like 70 different altercations with customers when he was trying to clean up the place and never lost one. In one incident he was shot in the back by a shotgun welding neighbor and he survived. He liked me and Helen for some reason and came to the office with his profits one year and said that, while he did not have enough money to buy land on the water and build a house, he did have enough to build a house and would I design a house boat that he might build and moor off shore in various harbors around MDI. This way he might have his water view. We visited with John Letcher of Aerohydro engineers and with Jock Williams at his boatyard to engineer the hull. It was a sweet little project but Gerry being Gerry by the time we solved the problem he was off on the next adventure.

Roc drawing for Robert Knight, Architect in Blue Hill foundation and framing plan, floor plans, details, elevations, kitchen, bath, schedules Roc's Comments: This is not a house I designed but it was done by my friend and former Yale Architecture classmate, Bob Knight. As I recall I was out of work and called Bob to see if he needed help and he asked me to do the construction drawings for this one. I was happy for the work. The final project was a great success and I am proud to have been associated with Bob.
