  • Publication, Catalog
  • Nature, Plants
The Northeast Harbor branch of the Mount Desert Nurseries was established in 1898. It was first managed by George Miller, brother of William Miller who managed the Bar Harbor business. It was then managed for several years by Richard Rothe prior to 1910 and then was taken over by Philip McLean. Summit Road. Rothe was a specialist on rock gardening and the photographer who took the picture of Mr. Curtis in front of the granite outcropping that is exhibited in the Lodge. Curtis often used the plants and services of Mount Desert Nurseries in his landscape engineering and garden developing work for clients on the island. It has been established that he used their laborers and plant material for the Bowen estate, Baymeath (Hulls Cove). This records also includes the postmarked envelope that the catalog was mailed to Joseph Curtis in Northeast Harbor.
